3 Roofing Maintenance Tips for the Fall Season

Have you been putting off inspecting your roof because this summer has been a scorcher? If you answered yes, that is quite understandable. However, fall provides the best opportunity to inspect and maintain your roof before winter comes along.

Here are a few tips to avoid any roofing issues this football season:

1. Get Your Roof Inspected

You may or may not have realized that your roof is your home’s first line of defense from weather. In the fall, it’s time to prepare for colder winter weather. The South doesn’t necessarily get loads of snow. However, ice build-up is another story. Be aware of any areas that could let in cold air. Look for leaks, stains, and cracks in the exterior/interior walls and ceiling. This could mean that there is an area in your roof that needs repair. Nobody wants cold air to move into their home! Making your HVAC system work harder than it needs to will cost you more in the long run versus fixing the problem head-on. Cracks and leaks can also let in moisture which leads to mold. This could cause more than just an eyesore!

2. Schedule Any Roof Repairs

If you find any damage, you need to repair it right away before the cold weather comes. Even if you suspect there is improper ventilation or poor insulation, schedule a roofer to come and check. During the winter, if there is an area air can enter, moisture can into your attic causing attic condensation. Frost can actually build up in your attic and do damage to your roof’s insulation and further structural damage to your home.

2. Make Sure to Clean Out Your Gutters

With the season changing, we will see the trees lose their leaves. While it’s a beautiful season, the leaves can jam your gutters. Gutter jams provide warmth and breeding grounds for pests. A blocked gutter system can also prevent water from flowing away from the house. Overflow will pour onto shingles (possibly causing rot) or into the house (which could affect drywall and lower your home’s air quality).
