How to Properly Clean Gutters

How to Properly Clean Gutters

Keeping your gutters clean and clear of debris is an important part of proper home maintenance. Gutters need to be kept clean in order to work properly. Standing water has the potential to cause damage to your roof and house and gutters help to prevent any such damage. At a minimum, gutters should be cleaned twice a year - in spring and fall. If you live in an area with a lot of trees, you'll need to clear your gutters more often.

When your gutters are clogged, the water can accumulate and affect the integrity of your roof. Be sure to check your downspouts too, they're an important tool for keeping water from saturating the ground around your house and creeping into your foundation.

STEP 1 - make sure that your ladder is the right height and is stable before you begin
STEP 2 - find a small trowel or another garden tool, or just use your gloved hands, to dig out all the muck that has collected in your gutters
STEP 3 - once you have removed all of the large debris, hose out the gutters, with the water shooting toward the downspouts

Clean gutters are efficient gutters, and when they are working properly you are less likely to experience water damage to your roof, siding, or foundation.
